It was around two years ago when the Plymouth Whitemarsh Ultimate Frisbee Team began. It started with a simple toss of the disk, but it's turned into a competitive (school vs school) league. Last year, being the first real season of the team, the Colonials played and won against many schools including Upper Dublin, Methacton, and Lassalle just to list a few. The team is coached by the handler of the Philadelphia Spinners, Ian Mcclean, and even sponsored by Mr. Wilson, himself. Practices occurred about twice a week and games about once. Wearing sick jerseys with high socks and head bands, the players play under the lights on the football field in front of a committed crowd. The players are extremely skilled and consider themselves either handlers or cutters; handlers are more likely able to chuck it downfield, whereas cutters are agile and able to leap up and catch the flying disk. Some cutters include star studded Tyler Poglitsch(#18), Alex Cruz (#76), Joey Kingsinger (#49), and Kareem Breeden (#18). The handlers include myself (# 21), Brett Finkelstein (#15),Daniel Marguielies (#20), and Vince Willey (#69). Players work together and are devoted to ‘get that dub.’ Simply put, this team is legit.
Yet it’s much more than a team: it’s a lifestyle, it’s a bond, it’s a family, it’s a group of friends who meet up to ‘flick da wrist.’ Jack Travis adds, “While we take the game seriously, there is never a time when we’re not messing around.” Last years team included one senior, two juniors, and 11 sophomores. It is clear we are a diverse team in both grade numbers and in cliques. However, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. The PWHS Ultimate Frisbee Team accepts everyone and welcomes all. And if we want to get the chip next year, we’re going to need some serious talent to add to our already successful team. We plan on going far in the playoffs but we’re not able to do so without your help. Not only is it encouraged that you check the team out, you should come out to some practices and listen for team meetings. It doesn’t matter who you are, you are welcome. Attendance is key, and this team is a great and fun way to enhance your High School experience.
