Since Halloween is right around the corner, we can expect tons of new horror movies about to surface. One of those early releases is The Visit. It starts off with two kids visiting their grandparents, and it's all downhill from there. It's seemingly filmed by a handheld camera, as is the new trend, making it seem as if this really happened, which only adds to the frightening experience for the viewers.
The plot is surprisingly good, with decent characters that have good backgrounds and are relatable. The little brother, who proves himself to be the comic relief throughout the movie, does a surprisingly good job of keeping things light-hearted even during bad times. The older sister, being the attempted voice of reason, does her part of being the person that repeatedly states there is nothing wrong; but besides the usual horror movie characters roles, there's actually some depth to these two siblings.
Of course, there were those few moments when the audience pleaded the characters not to do the things that always lead to something terrible, but what horror movie wouldn't have a few cliches? Which is all this movie had: just a few. The directors steered clear of most of the horror movie cliches and instead provided new types of scares, which proved to make the movie that much more terrifying.
Finally, the plot twists. Usually, most viewers can tell what's going to happen halfway through the movie, and simply hope that it won't. But things take a turn for the worst towards the end, and the audience goes from being creeped out to thinking that these kids are doomed in a matter of mere seconds. It was surprising, yet not at all far fetched.
Overall, I'd give the movie a 10/10. It's a definite must see.
