The Plymouth Whitemarsh High School golf team recently completed its 2015 golf season. The varsity team consisted of Matt Aprile, Jake Butler, Alec Goldberg, Jon Green, John Hansel, Stefan Kolkka, Jacob Laudenbach, Brendan McAllister, Steve Roehm and Jon Silberman.
Coached by Jeff Kavanagh, and assisted by Dave Stewart, the team beat all but two teams in the Suburban One League. Senior John Hansel said that “Upper Dublin and Wissahickon were the most challenging opponents in the league during the season.” PW narrowly lost by just one stroke to Wissahickon High School this season.
According to Hansel, “Our season was better than expected, we had a couple kids step up which gave us a chance for the league.” Mr. Kavanagh said, “We also need to strive to get better to take on some of the current powerhouses in the league such as Upper Dublin and Wissahickon.”
The league tournament took place on September 28, 2015. Mr. Kavanagh said that “this year we were very successful going 10-4 in the league and qualifying 4 individuals into Districts whereas we sent zero last year. This was a testament to the time and dedication each player dedicated to their game.”
The following fIve players qualified for the Suburban One League tournament which is the top 88 players in the league: John Hansel, Jake Butler, Matt Aprile, Jacob Laudenbach and Jon Green. The golfers who scored low enough to qualify for the District One Tournament were: Hansel, Butler, Aprile and Laudenbach. At the District One Tournament, John Hansel led the team with a score of 76. Hansel’s score was low enough to qualify for the second day of the tournament. John shot another great round of 76, narrowly missing the cut by just four strokes. Coach Kavanagh said that “this was the lowest the cut score has been in quite some time, in fact in my 10 years of coaching I can't remember a cut score this low at Districts. PW is very proud of John for his accomplishments and for representing PW in this tournament.”
