Seven hundred fifty-five million people lack access to clean water-- that is two and half times the size of the United States. Africa alone has three hundred fifty-eight million residents who do not have available clean water. A new club at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School has made it its goal to raise awareness and fund-raise for those who lack water, especially people who live in the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
Angelina DiSanto, a junior, believes in the need for PW to give back to those less fortunate than the citizens of the United States, and through this club, she feels that she can effectively bring attention to the issue and get teenagers involved in the mission to make water more accessible.
“I’m really excited about the water club,” explains DiSanto with a wide grin on her face. “I think it will be a great opportunity to showcase a problem that occurs around the world and find a way to prevent it. I’m looking forward to our first year!”
The first bonus block meeting is in October 15 in room 2015, and the club will meet frequently as the year goes on. A large aspect of the Water Club is fundraising, and DiSanto along with the other members will be hosting their first fundraising event in late October to early November. The theme of the event will be a movie night; “We will be showing a video about water shortage and having an info session. There will be food served as well,” said DiSanto. She hopes that the film will be eye opening to prospective members of the club.
In the future, the Water Club plans to have unique fundraisers such as tie-dying. In order to get involved with this exciting new community service club at PW, students can contact Mrs. Ajemian or DiSanto. As the members of the Water Club would say, “Water you waiting for?”
